Residential & Commercial security tips and questions answered.
Why should I have a home or business security system?

> To deter burglars from choosing your property as a target.

Why does an alarm security system deter burglars?

> Burglars usually "case" or look for potential targets from a distance.  When they see that a property is protected by a monitored security alarm system, they are more likely to move on.

But, they won't know you're protected unless you tell them by displaying your alarm company decals and yard sign so they can be see clearly from a distance!

Why have a monitored alarm system?

> To protect your loved ones by detecting fire or carbon monoxide.  In both these instances outside detection helps save lives.  If you're in your home or away, the monitoring station will receive signals of fire or high carbon monoxide levels and dispatch the appropriate emergency personnel.

> To protect your home or business; if your home or business catches fire while you're away a monitored smoke detector ensures that someone knows about it quickly and dispatches the fire department.

> To protect your possessions.  An alarm system is the first step in deterring a would be break-in, but sometimes when a burglar is determined nothing is going to stop them.

> In the case of a break-in properties with monitored alarm systems suffer much lower financial losses than those without.  Early detection helps keep losses and destruction to a minimum.

>>>Tip:
Many insurance companies will give you a discount on your insurance when you have a monitored security alarm system.  Check with them today.

If you have a business - check your insurance policy - a monitored alarm system may be a requirement.

If a burglar is still determined to break in, early detection helps keep losses to a minimum.

>>>Tip:  Whenever you are away always maintain a lived in look.....

  • In the winter arrange to have all snow removed. When appropriate keep the grass cut. Don't let newspapers and mail accumulate. If you can't arrange to have them picked-up have your deliveries held.
  • Use timers for interior lighting and motion detector activated exterior lighting.
  • Test your alarm system with the monitoring station a week before you're scheduled to leave. That way any problems can be taken care of before you go.
  • Make sure all emergency contact information is up to date with the alarm company
  • Ensure that anyone who will be entering your home while you're away understands how to work your alarm system, has all the necessary info and access codes.

Some advice from the Canadian Security Association...

"A security system is not something that you should buy off the shelf, it should be customized to meet your needs and finances. An on-site evaluation by the alarm company is recommended before an educated quote can be provided to you."              .....The Canadian Security Association (CANASA)

"It is essential that you focus your attention on selecting a qualified alarm company that is in a position to design a system which will meet your needs, however great or small."  .....The Canadian Security Association (CANASA)

Did you know.....
On average burglars spend less than 2 minutes trying to break-in
Approximately 12% of burglaries occur through unlocked doors

Don't just rely on your alarm system.  Always make it as difficult as possible for a burglar to get inside.  Make sure all doors and windows are locked (with adequate locks).  Don't leave ladders around outside your property.  Keep shrubs and bushes cut back from around your windows.
